A Big Smelly Bouquet of Corpse Flowers

  • Matthew Joaquin

If you ever were stuck in a neighborhood where all your neighbors were complete assholes and you needed a long con that really gave them grief after you left, this flower could be the solution to your problems. It’s called the titan arum, and it gets to be 9 feet tall and 3 feet across. It’s the largest flower in the world. But besides that accolade, it also does something really peculiar. It takes around 7 to 10 years to bloom, and when it does, it stinks to almighty heaven. They say it stinks like rotting flesh, which is why it is also known as the corpse flower. It does this to attract flesh eating insects to pollinate, since they end up thinking the scent is coming from some rotting animal. The smell is able to be picked up by bugs over a mile away, so if you were able to grow one of these babies in a hidden spot and dip out of that place before it blooms, I’m sure you could do some damage for a good 12 hours. Wikipedia says it gives off scents like rotting fish, sweaty socks, gnarly cheese, rotting flesh and human poop. I don’t think anyone would be too fond of those put together unless they’re into that kind of stuff. Everyone’s got their “thing”, I guess.

Here’s a short video about this… fragrant flower.
