Magnetic Press: Kicking Ass & Taking Names in the Comic Book World

Doomboy by Magnetic Press

Magnetic Press, the publisher of the Poet Anderson comic series, has only been public for a year, but they’re already making huge waves in the comic book industry. They were just nominated for not one, but two Eisner awards, a huge accomplishment for a new player on the scene.

What’s an Eisner award? I’m glad you asked. The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, are given for creative achievement in American comic books, basically the Oscars of the Industry. They were first created in 1988 after the demise of the Kirby Award, and recognize creators in a variety of thirty-one categories.

Magnetic Press first went public at Comic-Con International in San Diego in 2014. Since then, they’ve launched a diverse set of alternative media focusing strongly on edgy, musically oriented, science fiction, and fantasy mediums. The folks behind the publishing label boast decades of experience producing and releasing recognized, award-winning material for companies such as Dark Horse, Electronic Arts, Fox, Lucasfilm, and DC among others. And while most companies subscribe to the notion that the customer comes first, this label puts the creators at the forefront. Because without the creators, there would be nothing for the fans to consume.

Magnetic Press currently has a total of thirteen titles in their catalog, two of which were nominated for the awards:

Tony Sandoval’s Doomboy is up for the Best Publication For Teens (Aged 13-17). Doomboy is a visceral ride in a melancholy atmosphere of the sea meets graveyard - an homage to Sandoval’s childhood growing up in Mexico. Sandoval did both the artwork and story.

Doomboy by Magnetic Press

“DOOMBOY tells the story of an ordinary, lonely teenager with an active imagination and a love of metal music.  When his girlfriend passes away suddenly, he decides to broadcast songs to her beyond the grave, playing his heart out under the secret name “Doomboy”.  What he doesn’t realize, however, is that those broadcasts are picked up all across town… and beyond.  Soon the music of Doomboy becomes legendary, and his innocent private life quickly turns inside out.”

Doomboy will be up against The Dumbest Idea Ever (Graphix/Scholastic), Lumberjanes (BOOM! Box), Meteor Men (Oni), The Shadow Hero (First Second), and The Wrenchies (First Second)

The second nomination nod went to Dave Dorman’s Wasted Lands Omnibus for Best Graphic Album - Reprint.  It’s basically 152 pages of intertwining Sci-fi meets western meets fantasy in a Mad Max-ish type of inspired adventure.

Wasted Lands Omnibus by Magnetic Press“Award-winning artist Dave Dorman takes you on a high-speed, adrenaline-charged adventure to his world of post-industrial chaos, an unforgettable place and time where passion, greed, corruption and love color the everyday struggle to exist, where ordinary men, eccentric heroes and their horrific adversaries battle for power, and for the hearts and minds of mankind.”

Wasted Lands Omnibus is challenging How to be Happy, Jim, and Sock Monkey Treasury (Fantagraphics) as well as Through the Woods (McElderry Books).

The story was created by Dorman with contributions from Del Stone, Jr. and artwork by Christopher Moeller, Jon Forst, and Durwin Talon.

In 2015, To The Stars, Inc., joined up with Magnetic Press to bring our flagship comic, Poet Anderson: The Dream Walker, to the masses:

Poet Anderson: The Dream Walker“Anderson brothers Jonas and Alan have discovered a Universe beyond our own, one that can only be reached through dreams. A tangible world filled with fantastic and frightening things, accessible only to those lucky few with the ability to lucid dream. There, they will find not only mind-blowing adventure, but the key to a vast secret history and their role in the protection of The Waking World.”

The story, written by Tom DeLonge and Ben Kull (Father of the Pride, Mission Hill) unites with the diabolically edgy art of animation hot shot Djet, for an adventure of epic proportions.

To be nominated for such prestigious awards is a huge accomplishment. We’re thrilled for Magnetic Press and the creators and extremely excited for our future relationship with them. In celebration of their one-year anniversary, they’re having a massive sale. Throughout the month of June, you can get 40% off your entire order, including pre-orders by using the code: YEARONEROCKED. This would be a great time to go check out their catalog and while you’re at it, pick up issues 1 - 3 of Poet Anderson: The Dream Walker

Eisner Award winners will be announced at Comic-Con International: San Diego at a gala reception on July 10th, 2015.
