It’s a daunting task to try and define what makes a female character badass. Whether its wit, brute strength, weapon mastery, or just the right fearless attitude, these women have a bit of everything. Here we go, in no particular order, ten of the most badass females to grace the screens:
1. Ellen Ripley (Alien series)
When faced with an alien enemy like no other, Ripley is the only member of her crew with the skills and wit to survive. Not only that, but she also manages to save the fucking cat. She is tougher than a bunch of roided out space marines, obliterates a planet completely infested with Xenomorphs, and manages to get knocked-up with an alien queen baby. In fact, she is so indispensible that, after sacrificing herself, her former employers clone her as a human alien hybrid. Ripley, you the woman and you look great in a power-loader.
2. Michonne (The Walking Dead)
Michonne’s initial introduction might as well be why she is an ultimate badass. We first encounter her wielding a katana and dragging two zombies behind her with their jaws cut off (that makes it a little tricky to bite) in order to camouflage herself against the herds of walkers. The fact that she obliterates all that get in her way with a sword and remains as cool and collected as a peach is why Michonne’s earned her place here.
3. Dana Scully (The X-Files)
As an FBI-agent focused in forensic pathology, she was tasked with partnering with Fox Mulder to investigate cases of the paranormal. A skeptical catholic, Scully’s life was on the line with monsters, aliens, freaks of nature, super soldiers, and the government to name a few. After being kidnapped she is implemented with a microchip that gives her cancer, but she never gives up. More importantly, she saves Mulder’s ass on numerous occasions.
4. Captain Kathryn Janeway (Star Trek: Voyager)
Janeway was the first female captain in the Star Trek universe to be featured prominently. After her crew gets stuck 70,000 light years away from home in the Delta Quadrant, she vows to get them home. She battles numerous hostile alien species, saved a bunch of others, and then managed to get her crew safely back to Earth after seven years.
5. Sarah Connor (The Terminator franchise)
Sure, we can argue that Sarah Connor started out as weak sauce, but she quickly adapted to become one of the most iconic female powerhouses of action. Not only does she give birth to the man destined to become the savoir of the human race and lead the war against the machines; she is also an extreme warrior in her own right. She spends time as a fugitive, dabbles in terrorism, and crushes some Terminator ass. The only thing that managed to get the better of Connor was stupid Leukemia.
6. Daenerys Targaryen (Game of Thrones)
Daenerys managed to survive being engulfed in flames, hatched some unhatchable dragons, and became a fearless leader. She frees a bunch of slaves and reigns down hell-fire (and sometimes dragon fire) on those who mess with her or her people. The woman is determined to retake the throne of Westeros and builds up a kick-ass army to help her do just that.
7. Princess Leia Organa (Star Wars)
Leia is a Rebel spy and leader of the resistance. She has no issues wielding a gun and manages to battle Stormtroppers, trick Darth Vader, kill Jabba the Hutt, and, generally speaking, save the day. Plus, the woman has good taste when it comes to men, and being able to tell the ultimate babe that he is a stuck up, half-witted, scruffy looking nerfherder takes real ovaries.
8. Agent Melinda May (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D)
Agent May’s nickname is the Calvary after she mysteriously rescued a bunch of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents from a group of superhumans. She is both a pilot and a soldier but the real reason she qualifies as kick-ass is for her hand-to-hand combat skills. She continuously takes out mobs of enemies without even blinking an eye and then calmly walks away.
9. Storm (X-Men)
Not only does Storm lead her band of mutant cohorts known as the X-Men on occasion, she also can control the weather. SHE CAN CONTROL THE WEATHER.
10. Gamora (Guardians of the Galaxy )
Gamora is the sole survivor of the Zen Whoberi, a race of alien-humanoids, who was adopted by Thanos as a child. Thanos basically bred her as a weapon and she quickly became known as the deadliest woman in the whole galaxy. That’s a pretty epic nickname and she is a pretty epic fighter.
These women represent just a small slice of the abundance of badass female characters out there and, we’re happy to say, there are plenty more on the horizon.
